Description

Koza, meaning cocoon, is a chair shaped by its own definition. Emerging from ideas of protection and community, it translates these values into form.

Koza is a heavy, strong, almost brutalist sculpture. Veneered using two distinct parts of the same walnut tree: solid walnut and walnut burl.

The burl elements, positioned on the sides and the back of the chair, function like a protective shell, an exoskeleton that surrounds the body. With its dense, complex, and intertwined grain, the burl represents one’s roots and community, offering strength, shelter, and a sense of belonging.

In contrast, the seating surface is made from solid walnut veneer, the softer “belly” of the tree. This inner core provides warmth and comfort through its smooth texture and calm, repetitive grain lines. It is the place of rest, protected, grounded, and embraced by the structure around it.
